This book was written as one of series instigated by the Institute of Operations Management, the UK’s professional body for persons involved in Production Management, Supply Chain Management and Operations Management in manufacturing and service industries. In it John offers an easy to follow overview of the principles and practice of manufacturing control, with the emphasis throughout on practical approaches and techniques rather than on theoretical discussion. A key point demonstrated throughout is that many problems are common to different types of manufacturing enterprises, challenging one of the common misconceptions that leads people to believing that their business faces unique issues and therefore cannot make use of generic approaches. Another basic issue addressed is that of best practice being drawn from the whole range of techniques available – in particular that the classic argument of the Western approach of MRP being incompatible with the kanban element of Just in Time (JIT) is completely flawed.
